Background
Father: Alive but doesn’t disclose his name
Mother: Alive but doesn’t disclose her name
Languages: Mexican Spanish, English
Affiliations
Aldecaldos: member
Tumblr media
Carmelo loves to race and he's one of the fastest drivers they have in the clan.
Occupation: Mechanic and techie
Role: Automotive maintenance and repair, driver
Weapons: Sniper rifle, Nue and combat knife
Personality type: ESTJ-A: Executives are representatives of tradition and order, utilizing their understanding of what is right, wrong and socially acceptable to bring families and communities together. Embracing the values of honesty, dedication and dignity, people with the Executive personality type are valued for their clear advice and guidance, and they happily lead the way on difficult paths. Taking pride in bringing people together, Executives often take on roles as community organizers, working hard to bring everyone together in celebration of cherished local events, or in defense of the traditional values that hold families and communities together.
Carmelo's a techie originally from Mexico and found himself joining a Nomad clan. He was fleeing his home and turned up in their camp one evening. After making himself comfortable and then applying his technical skills to whatever the clan needed, he was accepted into their family properly. He's not very talkative but usually his face tells you all you need to know.
Tumblr media
Quick break with Scorpion.
As he became more settled they found out more about him. He fled because his brother got into hot water with a cartel. They were on the hunt for Carmelo to try and put pressure on his brother. Carmelo knew what his brother had done and wanted nothing to do with it, so being a target because of his mistakes wasn’t something Carmelo was too happy about. At least if he died on his journey, he died free and not at the hands of the people his brother was stupid enough to piss off.
Carmelo misses home; his Dad was also a mechanic and ran a garage. Carmelo learned from him and was to inherit the business from him after taking over the day to day operations when his Dad was too old. He was close to his family and was a proud uncle to his sister’s kid.
Carmelo is a bit of a magpie if you can’t tell by the gold! He’s got an eye for salvageable scrap and items too which for a Nomad clan is a very useful skill to make use of what they find and repairing what they already hold. He hates how disposable things are treated and making something useful again is a big love for him. He’s very handy with cars, trucks etc and they're his favourite thing to work on. Carmelo is very neat and tidy. He is very particular about keeping a workshop in order and tracking tools parts etc.
Tumblr media
Not taking care of your wheels is a quick way to lose respect with Carmelo.
While not very chatty to most people, he is friendly. He loves to play cards and when he’s usually the one to get people dancing in the evening when there’s music.
He can be a bit macho and in his romantic relationships this comes through more. He’s very protective, and if you want to fire him up badly, threatening or harming his loved ones is a sure way to bring out his dark side. Carmelo hasn’t been much of a relationship person. He’s had one or two brief ones, but they didn’t go well for various reasons, so his confidence in picking the right guy for himself is at an all time low. The transient nature of Nomad life means he has had a string of one night stands and Night City has been no different. He doesn’t like to admit it much but while he loves the excitement and fun of just hooking up, some times Carmelo knows that he is afraid of commitment because he has had bad experiences in the past. He does want something longer lasting and hopes the right person will help him open up more, it’s just getting over that fear. This is something Panam has noticed.
Tumblr media
One of his favourite places on camp, by the fire.
This all said, Carmelo meets Ren by chance in the El Coyote and a relationship develops. Ren’s extensive cybernetics are part of the reason for Carmelo picking up some maintainance skills because when they’re in the Aldecaldos camp Ren only trusts him to help keep them dust free if he’s ever around there. In Ren, Carmelo begins to find something that he feels more home and Carmelo loves helping Ren create new memories.
Carmelo had a nasty accident in the workshop back home where part of his hand was crushed and there was no way it could be saved. The ones on his face are because he was hit on the face when he was mugged. The damage done was enough to affect his ability to control muscles in his face and the nerves were also damaged. This effected how he spoke, he had numbness in his face and also meant that side could be a little lazy. But they had to be in a pair so as that both sides of his face work together. The gold is kind of his way of defying what happened and matches his jewellery.
Carmelo isn’t for tattoos on himself but he loves piercings and has multiple on his face, ears and body.
Tumblr media
Ren bought Carmelo the top and glasses. ✨️
Carmelo is somewhat religious but it’s a more spiritual take which would likely be frowned upon by traditionalists who still believe his sexuality is wrong. He does believe in a higher power and prays, believes in having guidance on morals but also knows that life is not that simple or black and white when it comes to bad/good and such. Prayer is more a meditation and reflection for him than anything even although he does carry a small rosary.
In his spare time, Carmelo is taking care of his Javelina, racing or exploring Night City with Ren.
Tumblr media
Before hitting the road.
Carmelo is in a relationship with Ren. He’s friends with Panam, Mitch, V, Voss, Valerian, Scorpion, most of the Aldecaldos, Nicky and Charlie.

recap of maggie’s twitch stream on november 17
she gained weight since she’s in a relationship and feels like her body isn’t snatched anymore like it used to be. she doesn’t work out a lot now (compared to last year, when she used to work out a lot) and she tends to always eat out. she said she doesn’t get acne or breakouts anymore ever since she stopped eating dairy completely. she tries to stay away from high sugar and carbs but rice is her favorite food. workout goals are lose some weight on upper body and tone up.
her boob job was completely painless, she didn’t take any pain medicine (she doesn’t promote surgery though). she got low plus profile, silicone implants. her doctor is roger tsai, in west hollywood.
she wasn’t a basketball fan before meeting jordan. she likes all sports, especially hockey and basketball because she feels like it’s the most entertaining. now, she loves watching his games as a way of supporting him and loving him. even when she can’t go, she watches the games online.
from swixxz, she likes the new sherpa hoodie that just came out.
she thinks about dyeing her hair all the time, but she doesn’t think she would do it. her hair is not naturally straight, she straightens it. she doesn’t want to cut her hair anymore and she would never go bald or get bangs. she is in a phase where she likes to experiment new hairstyles and makeup. she doesn’t wear eyeliner anymore, or barely. she is really into blush right now.
she got on the skims pr list and she is so happy because she buys a lot from skims.
she takes her pictures with a camera. sometimes she turns down the brightness but she doesn’t use filters.
she went to hawaii and she is going to mexico soon. her vitamin D is really low so she takes supplements and needs to get more sunlight.
she looks up to paramore and evanescence the most.
she got into a small car accident recently (someone hit her) so she doesn’t like to drive right now. she has a mercedes.
next single coming "seriously soon", no features on it
she used to be a picky eater but now she’s down to try everything, she considers herself a big foodie. jordan suggested they do tiktoks of themselves trying out food in restaurants. she doesn’t really cook.

Areas of the scalp
Do you know the different parts of your scalp?
The moment you noticed that your hair was falling out more than usual or that it was gradually becoming thinner probably took you to come across more than a couple of concepts you had never heard of before; scientific or even difficult to pronounce terms abound when you try to learn a little more about hair loss. But what happens when you want to know about the exact area where you are losing hair? Have you ever wondered what each part of the scalp is actually called?
Four principal areas of the scalp
The decrease in the amount of hair, regardless of the cause, is known as alopecia. Although this condition affects both men and women, men are statistically the most affected. Androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness (MPB) is the most common cause of hair loss in men, and as the name suggests, it is easily identified by the pattern it follows on the scalp.
Tumblr media
Frontal region
Also called central forelock, is the area located just in front of the head. It covers the hairline and the hair around the temples. This is the region that specialists refer to when talking about a receding hairline, M-shape or bitemporal regression.
For those men experiencing androgenic alopecia, this is the first area of the scalp where hair loss is noticeable.
Mil-scalp region
As the name indicates, this area is located just in the middle part of the scalp, behind the frontal region. It is also known as posterior mid scalp. Commonly, hair loss in that area occurs when the patient is in an advanced stage of male pattern baldness.
If you decide to undergo a hair transplant, it is important that the surgeon detects exactly the areas that need implants, because if grafts are only placed in the frontal region and none in the mildscap, it is quite likely that the result will look unnatural.
Vertex transition zone
Equally called vertex transition point, this area is located between the mid-scalp region and the crown. The vertex transition zone is a very important area to create density to reduce the illusion of baldness at the back of the head, as well as to frame the posterior scalp.
Crown
Commonly referred to by specialists as vertex, the term literally means the highest point. This area is located at the back of the head. The posterior mid scalp finishes at the vertex transition zone and that is where the crown starts.
Everyone loses hair naturally and it is normal for hair to thin when you get older. But the truth is that male pattern baldness is a genetic condition and only a specialist can help you determine the best treatment to restore your hair.
If you want to find a permanent solution to your receding hairline the most important is to see a specialist.
At Hair Center Mexico, our experienced hair restoration surgeons will be happy to help you determine if you have a receding hairline, as well as the best solution for your hair loss problem.

These three issues are the Broodfall story arc, one of my favorites from this era. It finally follows up on a plot Claremont started with Alex's introduction and then completely dropped until now, starting with a flashback to that time. A group of 20something friends are hanging out in the New Mexico desert when they see a starshark crash. They go to see what happened and are attacked by Brood. One, Harry Palmer, a paramedic, escapes. In the present, we learn he was actually infected, but is keeping his human form. The Brood embryo is hiding, letting him live like normal unless he finds a mutant at an accident. Then, it takes over, infects the mutant with an egg, and gives Harry back control without knowing what happened. In Australia, Maddie is the only one in the base with everyone on missions. She hopes for a quiet night until she's watching the news on the computers and sees Scott and Jean together, which makes her punch the screen and cause an explosion that knocks her out. In New Mexico, the X-Men have gone to investigate the Brood and picked up Harry's trail, but when they find him, he panics and attacks them with superhuman strength without understanding why. He's terrified as he flees across the city until the X-Men chase him down into an alley and realize it's an ambush- they're surrounded by Brood.
The situation gets worse when the X-Men realize every one of these Brood was a mutant and has kept their powers. They'd be overwhelmed even if they weren't reluctant to kill these Brood; in their half-transformed states, they don't know if they can be saved. Anna and Betsy fall victim to a pheromone powered Brood who enslaves them, while Logan is implanted with an egg. Across town, a young preacher named William Conover has come to give a service in the city. He and his wife, who has early arthritis, are laying on a hill looking at the stars. He's established here as the anti-Stryker, a truly kind man who describes mutants as the children of humans and bigots as cowards who fear the new. And back in Australia, Maddie is having a dream that she's flying on her own wings home to her husband and son, who are living together happily. But Gateway, who has lots of vague magic powers, can tell she's being manipulated, so he enters he dream and forces reality on it. Her house explodes, and a mannequin comes out and starts making out with Scott. He rips her wings off and then takes her hair and face away and puts them on the mannequin, turning it into Jean. They take her baby and leave her alone in the desert. Back in Denver, Alex and Peter kill two Brood, who turn back to human form. Although Alex is horrified, Ororo, who has changed since the first Brood Saga, tells him that they must exterminate these invaders or lose the planet.
The fight spills into a bar. At first, the patrons turn on Ali, who's wearing a costume, but when she tries to defend them they try to help her against the Brood. They don't do much damage, but Longshot and Peter come provide backup. Back in Australia, Maddie is still unconscious, but her dreams have been projected onto the screens. In them, she keeps wandering through the desert, and eventually the sun melts her bare face away, leaving her original features intact again. She meets S'ym, who takes her to an oasis and shows her his fingernails, each of which have a different reflection of her. He tells her to pick one, and, hoping for a little catharsis in a meaningless dream, she picks the evil one. But he tells her she just signed a contract and disappears. Back in Denver, Logan, captive of the pheromone Brood and the enslaved Anna, wakes up and slashes at his captors, making them drop him down into the city. He lands in front of Revered Conover, about to give a sermon in an amphitheater, and rather than run away, Conover takes Logan in his arms and prays to God to heal him. Whether through divine intervention or Logan's healing factor, but I like to think both, Logan expunges the Brood egg. In repayment, Logan kills the last Brood holding his wife hostage, and the X-Men seem to have won. They vanish back into the night, and Conover discovers his wife's arthritis is gone. He wonders if this miracle is his reward for helping Logan, but there's a nasty hint that she may have been infected with her own egg. The X-Men return home, unaware that Maddie is waiting comatose for them.
This was an amazing story arc, even better than I remember. I'll start by unpacking the Maddie stuff. The way I see it, being with the X-Men has forced her to confront what she originally was to them- Scott's wife. She thought she'd found a new role, but when she found out Jean was alive, it suddenly felt like a conciliation prize, her original and preferred identity in the team's world having been stolen back. It felt like a loss of identity. Then S'ym shows up. He melts away her mannequin face to restore hers, but really he's just taken away another layer of identity from her. She doesn't feel real right now or like herself, and he uses that against her to sink his claws in, which she unknowingly asked for. Maddie is, in many ways, a victim of her narrative. If she entered the X-Men's world as a love interest, but then is dumped and forced to stay in that world, she doesn't have a place anymore. So then she doesn't feel like a real person, so she starts to believe her decisions and desires don't matter, so then she makes a choice carelessly and is punished severely for it. It's not fair to her, but she can't escape it, so she might as well embrace it. As for the main plot, it's a fascinating continuation of the "Brood as imperialists" metaphor. The most interesting thematic element is the role the humans play. The Brood appropriate mutant identity and then play mutants up as the villains to the unwitting majority. Some humans actually do try to help in the first scene of the issue by fighting on behalf of the mutants, which is well-intentioned and brave but ultimately unhelpful. The true human hero of the story is Reverend Conover, who rather than try to be a white knight instead uses his privileged connection to a higher power to advocate for and support the mutants' rights and freedom. He's the kind of human the book needs to keep hope alive. One more thing to note is how cathartic the X-Men killing the Brood is. Even a few issues after they all fretted about killing Reavers and decided against it, every X-Man except Alex, who's a little dumb, kills Brood without hesitation. It's especially apparent when Ororo zaps one with lightning, which gave her an existential crisis last time, and Peter snaps the neck of one, the very same act of violence that signified his low point in the Massacre. The story has no qualms that the Brood deserve it, because mutants have the right to defend themselves against those who try to genocide them. After a little too much time spent on the Adversary for my taste, it's nice to see the political themes front and center again, which will continue into the next arc. I think a lot of writers overuse the Brood, but Claremont knows exactly how to make them effective and weaves a story as impactful as the Brood Saga.

SMART BOMB
The Completely Unnecessary News Analysis
By Christopher Smart
February 6, 2024
TOP 10 WAYS TRUMP IS LIKE ELVIS
Recently former president Donald Trump posted a split screen of himself and Elvis and asked his followers on TruthSocial media platform how much he looked like The King. (We are not making this up.) The staff here at Smart Bomb wanted to help out:
1 – They both have eyes but Trump's are kinda beady.
2 – The both have noses, although Trump's nostrils are always flared.
3 – They both have sexy lips, except for Trump.
4 – Donald and Elvis are both trend setters when it comes to hair.
5 – They both have nice complexions except Trump's is red and scaly.
6 – Like Elvis, women throw their panties at Trump.
7 – They both have big waddles of flesh under their chin, except Elvis.
8 – Elvis and Donald both look great in tight, white golf pants.
9 – They both have hair growing out their ears and noses.
10 – And the #1 reason Donald and Elvis are similar — they don't look like Taylor Swift.
THE $56 BILLION MAN & THE COMPUTER CHIP IN HIS BRAIN
In order to out-smart courts, investors and Tesla drivers, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk had his company, Neurolink, implant a wireless computer chip in his head. It is synced with a super computer called “Deep Purple” that is so smart it can it can out-think Donald Trump. “Telepathy” is what Musk christened the device but that may be a misnomer, there is no evidence it can read minds — yet. Musk got the chip after Judge Kathaleen McCormick ruled that he could not receive a $56 billion pay package from Tesla because it would harm investors. With his new Deep Purple computer-brain Musk intends to pull a fast one on the courts. In order to do so, Deep Purple was fed documents from New York's fraud case against Trump because experts say it is the best blueprint for screwing investors, banks and the government. Some pundits observe that Trump isn't very intelligent. But he does excel at cheating people and institutions, according to psychiatrists at John Hopkins. Musk is the first human being to test Deep Purple. Cautionary note: Reuters reported in 2022 that testing of the chip resulted in the deaths of 1,500 animals, including sheep, monkeys and pigs. For his part Musk said he isn't worried because he is not a sheep, a monkey or a pig. That's why they call him “genius.”
DON'T LIKE FEDERAL LAW — THEN SCREW IT
Hey Wilson, have you heard the latest; here in Utah if we don't like a federal law we can simply ignore it. For real. The State Legislature passed and the governor signed into law a measure by which we can thumb our nose (or use other gestures) at the feds, as if to say, up yours. Pretty cool, huh. Of course, like most things, the GOP brain trust on Capitol Hill didn't come up with this legal jujitsu on its own. Right now Texas is pretending to take up arms against the United States, i.e., President Joe Biden, because immigrants are entering the country illegally from Mexico as they have for decades. Of course, the U.S. Constitution doesn't allow states to go their own way but why pick nits when the curtain is going up on political theater — “As MAGA World Turns.” Oh, by the way, our governor, Spencer Cox, along with the rest of the Red State honchos, is on board with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott — playing the part of Sam Houston at The Alamo — as he dispatches the National Guard to stink it up so voters will continue to blame Democrats for the border chaos. Enter Donald “Davey Crockett” Trump who commanded his congressional foot soldiers to scuttle a bi-partisan immigration deal that could fix the mess. How can he campaign against Biden's border failure if it's been fixed. Remember The Alamo!
Post Script: That's gunna do it for another fun-filled week here at Smart Bomb where we keep track of the solar system so you don't have to. Hey Wilson, do you and the guys in the band know the moon is shrinking. For real. It's core is cooling and it's causing all kinds of moonquakes, which could mess up landing sites and exploration. The lunar surface has shrunk by about 150 feet in circumference over the last few million years, according to NASA scientists. It's a big deal on the moon but too small to cause any ripple effect on Earth or to tidal cycles. No Wilson, we're not sure what The Bible has to say about that but the Chinese Lunar New Year will go on as scheduled. FYI: this is the year of the Dragon. Speaking of moons, in October, NASA will launch its Europa Clipper space vehicle, which will travel to one of Jupiter's moons, Europa, to determine if it's suitable for life. Scientists predict it has a salty ocean beneath its icy surface. Discovered in 1610 by Galileo, it's one of the most promising places in our solar system that could support life. Among other things, the Europa Clipper will bring along on its eight-year mission the names of people who signed up through its “Message in Bottle” program.
There are plenty of songs about the moon. But let's forego those today in honor of Trump and Elvis. Wilson, we know you and the guys have something special just for this occasion:
You ain't nothin' but a hound dog Cryin' all the time You ain't nothin' but a hound dog Cryin' all the time Well, you ain't never caught a rabbit And you ain't no friend of mine When they said you was high-classed Well, that was just a lie When they said you was high-classed Well, that was just a lie You ain't never caught a rabbit And you ain't no friend of mine You ain't nothin' but a hound dog Cryin' all the time You ain't nothin' but a hound dog Cryin' all the time Well, you ain't never caught a rabbit And you ain't no friend of mine When they said you was high-classed Well, that was just a lie When they said you was high-classed Well, that was just a lie Well, you ain't never caught a rabbit And you ain't no friend of mine (Hound Dog — written by Jerry Lleiber and Mike Stoller, originally by recorded by Big Mama Thornton, 1952; popularized by Elvis Presley, 1956.)

Market Dynamics
There has been a significant increase in the inclination for minimally invasive and non-invasive aesthetic procedures over traditional surgical procedures in the past decade. Minimally invasive/nonsurgical alternatives offer various advantages over traditional surgical procedures, like fewer pain, minimized scarring, and quicker recovery. As per the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), there was an overall increase of 5.4% in the number of plastic and cosmetic procedures during 2017 and 2018.
Emerging countries like China, Brazil, Mexico, and India offer significant opportunities for players operating in the medical aesthetics market. little bumps in the road (pt. 20)
PART TWENTY OH MY GOD YOU GUYS WE’RE NEARING THE END
Ahem. Previously on LBitR...
The next time Lena wakes, it’s to the weirdly familiar yet inconceivable exasperating sound of loud, obnoxious slurping.
Before she can even begin to blink the bleariness out of her eyes, the sound assaults her ears again—it is so visceral it disconnects her from the space she’s occupying (namely, the bed on a DEO medbay somewhere) and transports her somewhere else, far, far away, to a diner in the middle of nowhere. With Kara.
The slurping resumes and she sits up like a shot, fast enough to make herself dizzy. She’s still in handcuffs, and her sudden movement makes them rattle noisily against the railing of her bed, cutting her movement short abruptly and making her bounce back into her pillows.
“Kara?”
The name leaves her lips before her brain can fully catch up with the improbability of that logic, though it arrives at that conclusion moments later, when Lena’s eyes adjust and see Nia’s quirked eyebrow eyeing her back curiously as she sips from a plastic to-go cup.
“Nope,” Nia quips after another unnecessarily loud slurp. “Just little ol’ me. Here,” she extends a hand to Lena, who takes the second to-go cup the young woman offers without even thinking. “It’s kale. Your favourite—for reasons unknown to mankind.”
Lena takes a tentative sip—she has to lean forward, a little clumsily and awkwardly, since the handcuffs don’t allow her to bring the cup closer to her face.
Nia pulls a face at Lena’s second, much less tentative sip. The smoothie tastes amazing, and it makes her release a happy little hum before she can catch herself, and Nia’s offended grimace reminds her so much of Kara. It’s weird, but a happy kind of weird, and Lena knows it’s probably the last reprieve they’ll get before shit well and truly hits the fan. So, she’ll take it—the reprieve and the smoothie.
Nia watches her down half of her cup in a matter of seconds with an expression close to abject horror. “Gross,” she mutters, then slurps again at her own smoothie, a purple concoction that admittedly looks quite good.
“Don’t judge me,” Lena says, amused and smacking her lips with delight. “I’ve been eating nothing but fast food for weeks. I can’t remember the last time I even saw a vegetable.”
Nia laughs. “No judgement, I have nothing against vegetables. I love salad. I just don’t blend it.”
“Well, thank you for my blended salad,” Lena drawls with a waggle of her brows. “I—and my arteries—deeply appreciate it.”
“You and your arteries are welcome,” Nia says, pulling out the rickety metal chair by Lena’s bedside and plopping down rather ungracefully. “I thought I’d keep you company for a little while, if you don’t mind?”
“Not at all,” Lena begins, but there’s something off about Nia’s tone—a slight warble of worry that Lena only spots because the young superhero won’t meet her eyes.
“Not that I don’t appreciate your lovely company,” she starts again, fiddling with the straw of her drink. “But… there’s something you’re not telling me, isn’t there?”
“There’s a ton of stuff I’m not telling you,” Nia replies easily, though her eyes are darting around everywhere in the room, except to Lena, in clear discomfort. “I’m a woman of mystery.”
Lena taps her nails against the plastic of her cup, squeezes it slightly, jostling the ice and making the plastic bend and creak as she scrutinizes Nia’s face. The young woman’s playfulness has all but vanished, and there’s a tension in the air that wasn’t there before, and it worries Lena.
“You’re here to keep an eye on me…” she starts with the obvious, watching for the most minute changes in Nia’s expression to indicate whether she was in the right path. “… because of Lex—no, that’s too easy; everything is because of Lex.”
There’s a slight sag to Nia’s shoulder’s, a microscopic shift to her brows, and they tell Lena what she wants to hear without words. “Because of Kara,” she breathes, and the way Nia chokes on her smoothie all but confirms it, and Lena immediately snaps into panic mode.
“Oh my god,” she gasps. “You heard something—you know something,” she says, free hand clenching around the flimsy sheets of her bed. It’s not a question, and Lena doesn’t phrase it as one, but the guilty look on Nia’s face answers it perfectly either way. “Is she here? Is she on her way?! Nia, you can’t let her come, we have to stop her! It’s a trap! She cannot come!”
“I know, I know, Lena,” Nia says, forcing a bit of calm that is not naturally occurring in her tone at the moment. “Please calm down; Kara is not in National City,” she grimaces. “At least not yet.”
“Then where is she?” Lena asks, voice wavering in a way she doesn’t even attempt to control. “She absolutely cannot come here.”
“I know,” Nia sighs. “We know. She was spotted by one of Lex’s satellites in Mexico.”
“Mexico…” Lena murmurs, mostly to herself. “For some sun, probably. Is she alright?”
“I would assume so; she was a literal blip on the radar, almost too fast to be picked up at all.”
Lena breathes a deep sigh of relief, sinking into the miserable pile of crappy pillows at her back. “Good,” she says, closing her eyes, already trying to map out the next steps from here. “Good, that means we still have some time.”
Nia quirks a brow in question. “Time? Time for what?”
Lena looks at the young woman like she’s gone insane. “Time to foil whatever Lex is planning to do next,” she explains as if Nia is missing something painfully obvious, because isn’t it? Painfully obvious? Does Nia just expect her to sit tight, handcuffed to this bed, while Lex continues with whatever lunacy he has in store for Kara?
“Brainy said the implant can’t be removed or disabled from a distance, but I was the one who created the system they run on. If I could somehow sneak into the mainframe, maybe I could—”
“Woah, woah, woah, let me stop you right there, Lena,” Nia interrupts, looking panicked. “Hold your damn horses—you are not going anywhere except another, more secure facility. You’re not stepping foot in LuthorCorp—no way.”
“Nia,” Lena hisses, vaguely aware she’s close to sounding like a petulant child, but not even remotely close to caring. “I have to—I’m the only one besides Lex himself who stands a chance in hell of disabling those systems.”
“No way, Lena. No. It’s too risky.” Nia says with an air of finality.
Of course it’s risky. Lena’s not blind to that simple fact—never has been. But the other simple fact is that any world with Lex Luthor in it presents more risk than anyone would be willing to accept.
“What’s the alternative, then? Keep me here, handcuffed, while Kara swoops in for a rigged death match against my brother??”
Nia flinches, and that tells Lena everything she doesn’t want to hear.
“Oh my god, you are,” she practically yelps, watching Nia shrink into herself at her outburst. “You can’t just keep me here! I could help, I could—I have to help—”
“I can, and I will!” Nia suddenly shouts, standing up so abruptly she sends her chair screeching backwards across the floor. “Don’t you understand, Lena? Lex wants to use you and Kara against each other. Every time I close my eyes, I see my friends—my friends, Lena, which includes you, you asshat! I see you two killing one another, over and over again! It’s already happened once, and I cannot let it happen again!”
Nia’s shoulders are shaking—her smoothie dropped and now leaking all over the floor. Lena can see the tears threatening to spill from her eyes; her fists are clenched and trembling at her sides, and all Lena wants to do is reach out and hold the young woman’s hands in her own, to tell her everything will be OK.
But can’t make those assurances; they both know it.
Nia releases a breath—it comes out as a sad little laugh. “You won’t be… you know, you won’t be handcuffed,” she says, as if the restraints were the whole point. “You’ll be at another facility, out of Lex’s reach until this is all over.”
Lena shakes her head, but she doesn’t have the heart to tell Nia that it’s useless. There’s no place Lex can’t reach. “What about Alex?” she asks instead. “She’s got an implant too.”
“Alex will go to the secure facility with you. She volunteered—she doesn’t want Lex to use her to hurt Kara either.” Nia sighs, finally looking Lena in the eye, though she looks defeated. “Lena, I know this isn’t ideal. But we’re running out of time, and we’re running out of options. It’s the best we can do.”
Lena doesn’t voice her disagreement—her gaze makes it clear enough that Nia sighs again, sinking back into her chair with a frown.
The silence is tense; Nia is not looking at her. Lena runs through all the possible arguments she thinks of in her head, before deciding they are all moot. The decision has clearly been made.
But Lena is stubborn. To a fault, really.
“Nia,” she whispers, waiting for the young woman to raise her head to look her way. “Why did you take me to Kara? When she was on the run?”
Nia shrugs. “I had a vision of you two—Kara was wearing her suit, but she had short hair.”
“And what happened?”
“I’m not sure,” Nia admits, biting at her lip nervously. “I’m still trying to decipher it. But I knew—with or without the vision, I just knew you wouldn’t… kill her. I knew you two had to be together for any of this to work.”
Lena takes a deep, deep breath—she’ll analyse whatever Nia’s trying to convey later, but now she has to grasp at the only out she has.
“Together you said,” she repeats, voice breaking. “Then you’ve got to let me help her.”

this soundtrack fill is for kittenlzlz, who i cannot tag because it’s all sabotage all the time over here. also, i'm sorry, i didn’t realize you’d changed your prompt until after i wrote this one, so this is for the first thing you sent in.
anyway, here’s some dystopian sci-fi angst for sam and bucky with a hopeful ending. the song for this one is “achilles come down” by gang of youth.
                                                         —
When he was young, Sam spent thirty-seven weeks in New Mexico, learning how to keep people alive until evac. That others may live was a motto they preferred to operationalize rather than idealize, and, without the EMT training, pararescue tended to turn into high-risk body retrieval. So he spent the better part of a year learning how to keep a body breathing, and he learned, also, how to recognize when any effort was likely to be wasted.
Which is how he knows that what he’s looking at isn’t fully human. Because a human would already be dead.
It’s the blood that tells him, more than anything else. The Chitauri bleed a thick, dark blue substance that goes black if their cybernetics are leaking. And there’s plenty of blue and black puddled on the asphalt, but that red is a hemoglobin gift, and that means it’s all human.
“Shit, man,” Sam says, crouching next to the only human at this massacre. “You could keep a blood bank in business all by yourself.”
The man lifts his head and blinks at him, slow and a little dazed. Not dazed enough, though. He can almost focus on Sam’s face. “Not anymore,” he says, after a beat.
More blood bubbles up at the corners of his mouth. Sam can see it between his teeth.
“Yeah,” Sam says. And he laughs, because he might as well. Because he came out here with a team of ten to clean out the aliens, and it looks like one guy did their work for them. “Guess not.”
He’s a pathetic sight, really. Ragged body armor, hair clumped together, skin sticky with blood and ichor. He’s belly down on the cracked parking lot, and there’s a smear of blood behind him, showing exactly how far he’s managed to drag himself.
Sam’s not excited about what he’s going to see, when he rolls this guy over on his back.
“You gonna fight me if I help you?” he asks.
Most of them, these Enhanced, the surviving Super Soldiers, they can’t help it. Sam’s had to put a few down himself, although not for a while now. It’s been almost a year since he had to kill anything with a human face.
The man sighs. He rests his forehead against the asphalt, closes his eyes. His fingers flex and then go still. “I don’t know,” he says.
That others may live, Sam thinks. But the problem has always been that lives are balanced on both sides of the scales, and, sometimes, saving one means sacrificing another.
This man killed fifteen Chitauri, and he did it alone. There are kids back at the base. Vulnerable people.
The safest choice would be to leave him here. Let him save himself, if he can. But Sam’s never really been the safe choice type.
“Okay,” he says, hands curling around his shoulders, carefully rolling the man over on his back, “let’s see the damage.”
It’s enough to kill a human. But that’s not really what he’s dealing with.
                                                           —
The Super Soldiers were a desperation play. Sam was supposed to be one of them. The best of Earth’s fighters, dosed with serum, patched up with cybernetics based on Chitauri tech, sent out to face the enemies that had invaded the planet.
Sam’s still not sure exactly how it happened, what level of their defenses failed. He only knows failure by its consequences.
The neural implants were hacked. The soldiers turned against their people. Sam, who’d been four days out from his own procedure, was shifted to a team tasked with hunting them down and eliminating them.
These days, there aren’t many left. There’s not much of anyone left. The Chitauri fundamentally misunderstood their target. Sam could’ve warned them. The species of mutually assured destruction was never going to die quiet.
He thinks about that while the Soldier sleeps, chained to a bed in a locked basement in an abandoned building two miles from the base. Sam keeps watch. He has a radio in case anything goes wrong, but he doesn’t intend to use it for anything other than warning them what’s coming.
“I could’ve been you,” Sam tells him. And then, smiling at nothing, shaking his head, “Hell, you could’ve been me.”
He wonders where he’s from. He wonders what his name is.
He wonders, when he can’t help it, what he did. If he ever killed anyone Sam used to know.
                                                           —
The Soldier sleeps for forty hours and then sits straight up in bed, rips the chains off his wrists like they’re pipe cleaners, and then turns to face Sam. “What the hell,” he says.
“Oh, well,” Sam says, too startled to be afraid. “Didn’t want anyone stealing you.”
The Soldiers makes a face at him, an incredulous sneer that twists up his mouth and pulls his dark eyebrows together, and he looks so human, so perfectly skeptical, that Sam starts laughing.
“Well,” he says, with a shrug, “you killed fifteen aliens with a tire iron. You’re a treasure.”
“And I want it back.” he says, immediately. “Where’s my tire iron?”
“Confiscated,” Sam says.
He glares, and Sam‘s probably meant to be intimidated, but he knows – they both know – that, if this guy wanted to scare Sam, he could just start breaking bones. Or walls. “I want it back when I leave.”
“Leave,” Sam repeats. He kicks back in his chair, balances on the back legs as he swings his feet up onto the Soldier’s bed. “Why’re you leaving?”
The Soldier stares at Sam’s booted feet near his knees. “Usually it’s the fact that I’m a timebomb that chases me off,” he says, “but it looks like your manners are the real horrorshow around here.”
Sam grins at him. He’s merciless about it, uses the most charming smile in his arsenal. He expects the guy to soften a bit, but he’s not expecting the doubletake he gets, the there-and-away bounce of his stare, like Sam’s suddenly something he wants to look at but doesn’t want to get caught looking at.
Huh, he thinks.
“When’s the last time you hurt someone?” Sam asks.
The Soldier’s face crumples up and then flattens out. “What is this? Some kinda trial? An interrogation?”
“If this were an interrogation, I wouldn’t’ve given you the soft pillows,” Sam tells him.
The Soldier doesn’t look like he buys it. But, after a moment, he tips his head to the side. “Probably wouldn’t want to get blood on these white sheets,” he acknowledges.
“Christ,” Sam says, because that more or less seems to be the only thing he could possibly say to something like that.
The Soldier shrugs. He brushes his hair away from his face, blinks, and gives Sam a skeptical sideways stare. “Did you wash my hair?”
“With a firehose,” Sam confirms. “Damn near shaved the whole thing off. You were a mess, man.”
He shrugs. “It’s messy work.”
And, sure, it is. Sam knows. His base is the first resettlement outpost in this region. They’ve been clearing Chitauri out of the area for months.
But he still takes a damn shower whenever possible.
“Who were you?” Sam asks. “Before the program?”
The Soldier looks away. Looks at nothing. After a long pause, he recites, careful and rote, “Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes. 107th.”
“Okay,” Sam says. “James. When’s the last time you hurt a human being?”
He worries at his lower lip, teeth pressing into the skin. He’s quiet for a very long time. “Thirteen months, ten days,” he says, finally.
Sam considers the timeline. “You think it’s over?”
“I think the implant’s in my fucking brain,” he says. “It’ll be over at brain death.”
“It’s just a chip,” Sam says. “It’s not sentient. Someone’s gotta send the message, right?”
The Soldier’s jaw works. “Even if the aliens stay out, there’s gonna be plenty of people who want to use someone like me, as soon as they rebuild enough to manage.”
It’s a hell of thing, and it could’ve been Sam.
He nudges the Soldier’s knee with his boot, and the Soldier stares at the point of contact. He doesn’t look angry anymore. If Sam had to use a word to describe the expression on the Soldier’s face, he thinks he’d use something bittersweet and barbed, something like lonely or longing.
“Gonna be a long damn time before anyone’s rebuilt,” he says.
“Aliens could have reinforcements here at any time,” the Soldier says.
“Maybe,” Sam says, although he thinks they might’ve learned some kind of lesson. At the very least, they’ve probably learned that it’s just not worth the effort.
“Look,” Sam says. “I think you should come back to the base.”
“No,” he says. Immediate and definite, louder then he’s been so far.
Sam expected it. Maybe part of him hoped for it. “Okay,” he says. “Then we’ll stay here. And, when you’re better, I want you to take a radio. And I want you to check in with us. All right? Every day.”
The Soldier stares at him. “Why the hell would you want that?”
Sam smiles, studies the hollows of the Soldier’s face, the scars, the freckles he must’ve earned when he was young, used to play too long in the sun. He has, Sam thinks, beautiful eyes. “There’s not a lot of us left,” he says.
“‘Us,’” the Soldier repeats, scoffing audibly.
“Us,” Sam repeats. He nudges the Soldier’s knee again, and the Soldier cuts his eyes away, glares at the wall. But, a moment later, he shifts, leans his knee into Sam.
                                                         —
His name is Bucky Barnes. He’s fussy as hell, stubborn beyond belief, helpful every chance he can get, and fond of cats and songbirds. He doesn’t cheat at cards, and he doesn’t accuse Sam of it either, even when Sam beats him damn near every hand.
He’s a good man. Even now.
“I’m gonna miss you,” Sam says. Because it’s been two weeks, and Bucky’s decided he’s well enough to go.
Bucky ducks his head. “Shut up,” he says.
Sam wonders if he was always this head shy about affection.
“C’mere,” he says. “I’ll give you a goodbye kiss.”
“Shut up,” Bucky says, practically scuttling away, head still ducked. When he raises it, he’s grinning one of his ghost grins, the ones that almost show who he used to be, like a faint echo of a louder, happier man.
“Okay,” Sam says. “But if I don’t get a goodbye kiss, I’m definitely not gonna talk dirty to you on that radio. You gotta put in the work, Bucky.”
“I hate you,” Bucky tells him, and his crush couldn’t be more obvious. Sam would be embarrassed for him, if he weren’t busy being charmed.
“Yeah, yeah,” Sam says. “Check in every day, or I’m gonna track you down.”
“Hm,” Bucky says. He adjusts his pack on his shoulders. He’s got that tire iron, an alarming number of knives, and two guns. He’s setting off to kill more aliens. He’s going alone. “That supposed to be a threat?”
He was a Barnes in the Army and Sam was a Wilson in the Air Force, and so Bucky is a Super Soldier and Sam is not. It’s unpredictable, sometimes, the way mercy falls.
“Be careful out there,” Sam says, and he knocks his elbow against Bucky’s.
“Yeah,” Bucky says. He rolls his eyes and then catches Sam watching, and he blinks, falters. “Yeah,” he says, again. Softer, steadier. A promise, not a joke.
Sam considers him, lets the moment hang. Waits. Sometimes, all Bucky needs is the space and time to make up his own mind.
“I’m gonna miss you, too,” Bucky says.
“There it is,” Sam says, grinning, almost crowing in triumphant. “There--”
“Oh, Jesus,” Bucky says, rolling his eyes again, getting theatrical about it. “I already regret saying it.”
“Can’t take it back,” Sam taunts, grinning wide and smug.
“I’m going,” Bucky says, and he starts off, doesn’t look back.
“Hey, Buck,” Sam calls, when Bucky’s just about to break through the treeline, disappear into the woods. “I hate to see you go, but I love----”
“Fuck off, Sam!” Bucky says, but he’s laughing, and Sam can still hear it – surprised and happy, fully human – even after Bucky disappears.
